MULLINS, S.C. – Mullins Mayor William “Bo” McMillan was outside Mullins Kwik Stop-Amoco Friday afternoon helping store owner Shadi Alyatim distribute more than 100 free box lunches to children. Just days earlier, Gov. Henry McMaster ordered the closure of all inside dining in an effort to fight the corona virus pandemic.

“I wanted to help him get it all done and give-away lunches for school-age kids,” McMillan said. “We’re supposed to be neighbors helping neighbors. We’re all in this together.”

Alyatim opened the Amoco station back in June and said it felt good to help out others.

“We’re trying to be part of Mullins and not just doing business,” he said. “We’re giving away fried chicken, mash potatoes, corn, bread and chocolate milk.”

The order is a blow to the business for local bars and restaurants. Fast food also closed their dining rooms.

“It is allowed and recommended that takeout, curbside delivery of food....all that be increased, enhanced,” Gov. McMaster said.

McMillan said there is a way to support local businesses.

“Shop local and spend your money at home,” he said. “We need to spend money within our city. So much of what is happening with the restaurants is that we’re missing out on sales taxes and hospitality taxes and we need to patronize those that are here for us day-in and day-out.”

More than a dozen establishments remain open in Marion County and providing curbside service.
