SPARTANBURG – Last weekend, 59 athletes represented the Florence Track Club in the United States Track and Field Junior Olympic regionals. Twenty of them qualified for nationals, held the week of July 25 in Sacramento, California.

Kaylanna Burroughs, a gold-medal winner in all three of her state events, qualified in three of her events for the nationals with two golds and silver. Caelin Sloan qualified in both javelin and 1,500-meter race walk.

In addition, three other athletes — Cassie Hitch (1,500 race walk), Brailey Sloan (3,000 race walk) and Cameron Aldridge (javelin) — also won gold. The top five in the Regional competition make it to Nationals.

Also coming in 5th was Ellison Banner in Javelin for the girls 8-under division. Since USATF only allows athletes that are 7 years and older to compete at the National level, Ellison (6 years old) will have to wait another year.

Donations to help fund the athletes’ trip to nationals can be sent to the Florence Track Club, C/O City of Florence Parks and Recreation, 513 Barnes St., Florence, SC 29501.
