McLeod Health

McLeod Health nurses provide excellence in care with skill and compassion.

The nurse’s role in the care of patients is multifaceted. Registered Nurses (RNs) contribute to the assessment, fact finding and collection of data that provides valuable information to determine the patient’s ailment or diagnosis. Nurses develop a unique plan of care for each patient that ensures Physician orders are carried out as well as address the personal, emotional and educational needs of the patient. Nurses perform procedures, administer treatments and medications, and collaborate with other health care team members to meet the patient’s needs. Nurses play a key role in monitoring the patient’s progress and recovery. They also teach patients and family members how to continue care after hospitalization or discharge from outpatient services.

Ask almost anyone to name a nurse and a likely response will be the well-known “Florence Nightingale,” who has become the symbol of professional nursing.

Nurses continue to be the mainstay of care for patients in hospitals. While physicians evaluate patients and other therapists or medical professionals provide critical services, the nurse consistently and constantly attends to hospitalized patients.

Many hospital nurses develop specialties, after their basic nursing education, in response to the growing specializations in health care. These nurses may specialize in medical care, surgical care, pediatric care, or critical care (for patients with very specific illnesses, - - such as heart disease, stroke, trauma, or any other disease).

At McLeod Health, more than 2,000 nurses touch thousands of lives with their expert hands and compassionate hearts.
