HEMINGWAY, S.C. -- Well, another year came and went. Everyone got a little older and hopefully a little smarter. Now the weather is turning warmer and the plants are blooming.
In April, we had our BBQ Shag Festival, and everyone was excited. There were rides for the children. Vendors cooked some good food. The festival featured music, dancing and a shag contest. Last but certainly not least was our barbecue-cooking contest. People came from all around to try to win the first prize of $3,000.
Our next festival is our Bluegrass Festival, which is held in the fall. This is a one-day event, but there are many things going on and something for everyone. We have some of the best bluegrass music in the Southeast. You can bring your chairs and enjoy the music. There is a chili cook-off, which everyone loves. There are vendors selling their wares, and there is a large array of food for sale. Also entertainment for the children.
New LED lights have been installed in our neighborhoods. We are working with Duke Energy to come up with a solution to our lights downtown.
The old medical building just west of town still remains vacant, and we are trying hard to entice a tenant to occupy that space.
Our new playground equipment was a big hit, so the town council is mulling over our ideas of possibly adding more in the future.
Our new Town Hall is near completion. The Hemingway Town Council came up with the idea of purchasing the Powell Gift Shop when it became available. After many discussions with contractors and architects, a plan was developed and the project took off. Not only does it provide the town with new surroundings, but it uses one of our vacant buildings. If you haven’t noticed all of the work being done, come by and Samantha and Glenda will be happy to show it to you.
