FLORENCE, S.C. – The Florence Police Department Police Fund has awarded the first scholarships honoring the memory of Sgt. Terrence Carraway.

The 2019 recipients of the Sergeant Terrence Carraway Memorial Scholarship are Gracie Epps of Darlington High School and Jayden Smith of Wilson High School.

Florence Police Chief Allen Heidler presented the award to Smith, and Carraway's wife, Allison, presented the award to Epps in a small ceremony with their family members and Florence Police Department command staff.

Epps will attend Coastal Carolina University and will major in special education. Smith will attend South Carolina State University and will major in civil engineering.

Carraway was killed in October in an ambush in a west Florence subdivision. He and other city police officers had gone to the aid of Florence sheriff’s deputies who came under fire as they tried to serve a search warrant. Seven officers were wounded and two of them died: Carraway and sheriff’s investigator Farrah Turner.

Carraway was from Darlington and had worked in the Florence Police Department for 30 years. He is survived by his wife and three children.

The scholarship was established in January to honor the life of Carraway and continue his passion for the advancement of youth in the Florence and Darlington communities. This need-based scholarship will be awarded annually to one recipient from Florence County public high schools and one recipient from Darlington County public high schools.

The $1,000 scholarship awards are made payable to the recipient’s educational institution.
