FLORENCE, S.C. – The Rotary Club of Florence will host its third Forget Me Not 5K Color Run/Walk for Alzheimer’s awareness on Aug. 3. Runners will start at the Southeastern Institute of Manufacturing and Technology Center on the Florence-Darlington Technical College campus. The run will begin at 8 a.m.

The Forget Me Not race, a color run, was organized by the Rotary Club to raise money for the local Alzheimer’s Association. Runners will be sprinkled with colored powder as they run.

"One of our members passed away from Alzheimer's a few years ago,” said Jonathan Edwards, president of the Rotary Club of Florence. “Many of us have a loved one suffering from it, and we all know someone in our community that's affected by it. That's why it was important for us to raise money to support local families who are coping with this devastating disease."

While some runners/walkers participate for the exercise or competition, others participate in memory of loved ones who battled or are still battling Alzheimer’s.

“Funds for the event are going to the local Alzheimer’s Association,” said Blake Branham, the chairman of the event.

He said that according to alz.org, the Alzheimer’s Association website, Alzheimer’s is the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States, and 5.8 million Americans are living with the disease, with that number projected to rise to approximately 14 million by 2050.

“I have many friends and acquaintances that have been affected by the disease,” Branham said.

More than 200 runners participated in the inaugural event in 2016 and roughly 150 in the second one. The Rotary club is anticipating a large group of runners this year. The fee for preregistration is $30. T-shirts are guaranteed for those who register by July 19.

Cash prizes of $100, $50 and $25 will be given to the first-, second- and third-place male and female finishers.

First through third in age groups will receive medals. Categories are 7 and under, 8-12, 13-16, 17-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70 and over.

Sponsorships are still available at the diamond level ($2,500), platinum level ($1,000), gold level ($500), silver level ($100) and bronze level ($50). Other sponsorship opportunities include bib, goodie bag, sunglasses and vendor sponsors.

Simply Timing will coordinate the races and record the times.
