KINGSTREE, S.C.— A Florence County man was arrested Friday by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
Jacob Stokes, 36, was charged with embezzlement of public funds, value less than $10,000.
He is accused of collecting $100 fees for a Clemson University pesticide applicator course from 14 people and converting those funds for his own personal use.
Stokes was booked at the Williamsburg County Detention Center.
The SLED investigation was requested by the Clemson University Police Department. Clemson operates extension offices throughout the state, including one in Williamsburg County.
The case will be prosecuted by the Third Judicial Circuit Solicitor’s Office. Williamsburg is one of the constituent counties of the Third Judicial Circuit.
