JOHNSONVILLE, S.C. – Appointed board member Christopher G. Marsh took the oath of office Monday evening, making him an official member of the Florence County School District Five board.

Marsh fills the seat on the board that was formerly held by Holly Wall. He will serve Wall’s unexpired term. Wall resigned from the board because of a new opportunity as a magistrate judge.

Marsh previously served as a board member.

At Monday’s board meeting, the board approved the third reading and adoption of the 2019-20 proposed general fund budget. The budget’s total is $10,013,330.

“We’re going to end up going with what was projected which is a 4 percent raise for certified employees,” said Wanda Willis, the district’s finance officer. “At this point, it’s still a 2 percent raise for noncertified. We are hopeful that we may come into some funding in July.”

The funding might be possible because of changes in the numbers of people in poverty. Willis said if the district happens to get more funding, she will come back to the board for an amendment to the budget.

In his report, district superintendent Randy Smiley said HVAC and summer maintenance are currently being done at school within the district. He said he expects work might be complete at the middle school by Aug. 1. Some painting will be done at the school but not much. Smiley said workers are trying to get the buildings ready for when students return in the fall.

In other business, the board also approved the acceptance of Title I funding in the amount of $484,493.68. Smiley said most of the funding goes to Johnsonville Elementary School and is primarily used for class size reduction and to pay for staff development at the school.
