FLORENCE Joseph Franklin "Frank" Stokes, Jr., 94, died Friday, June 21, 2019, after an illness.Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Sunday, June 23, 2019, at Central United Methodist Church, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends at home and following the graveside service at the cemetery.He was born in Florence, a son of the late Joseph F. Stokes, Sr., and Mary Alice Middleton Stokes. He graduated from Florence High School in 1941. He served in the United States Air Corps during World War II, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. He flew 50 combat missions as a tail gunner on a B24 in the European Theatre with the 15th Air Force. He was awarded the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, a Presidential Unit Citation, five Battle Stars in the European Theatre, and a Good Conduct Medal during his time in service to his country.He retired from Atlantic Coast Line/Seaboard Coast Line Railroads and Amtrak as Ticket Agent in Florence after 44 years of service. He was a member of the Retired Railroad Employees Club. He was also a licensed insurance and real estate broker for 14 years.He was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Florence over 90 years. He was a member of the Christian Family Sunday School Class (past President) and the Methodist Men. He served as Superintendent of the Sunday School Department, was on the Administrative Board, the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee, and various other committees in the church.Mr. Stokes was a past member of the S.C. National Guard, the U.S. Army Reserves, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a charter member, life member, and Member Emeritus of the Florence Golden K Kiwanis Club, where he served as the first secretary and treasurer; and was named distinguished secretary for 6 years. He also served on the Board of Directors, was a George F. Hixson Fellow, and a Golden K Foundation JEB Fellow.Mr. Stokes enjoyed fishing and playing golf around the area with many friends. He scored three holes-in-one in his lifetime. He was a past member of Pee Dee and Tri-County Senior Golfers Associations.He is survived by his wife, Sarah Meadors "Sissie" Stokes of the home; daughters, Beverly Stokes Stewart of Fayetteville, NC, and Sarah Lucius "Sallie" Stokes of Garden City Beach, SC; a grandson, Thomas Earl "Trey" Stewart, III (wife, Ashley Trimble Stewart) of Greensboro, NC; two great-grandsons, Thomas Earl Stewart, IV, and Fuller Trimble Stewart; a step-sister, Dorothy "Dot" C. Johnson of Darlington; brother-in-law, (Ret.) Bishop Marshall L. "Jack" Meadors, Jr. of Edisto Beach, SC; sister-in-law by first marriage, Rose Marie Cook of Lake City, SC; and many cousins, nephews, and nieces.He was predeceased by his first wife, Roy Lee Ward Stokes.Memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Church, P.
