FLORENCE, S.C. – The Florence Area Literacy Council’s Lip Sync Battle will return on Thursday.

The event is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Southeastern Institute of Manufacturing and Technology Center on the Florence-Darlington Technical College campus.

This year’s lip sync battle features nine contestants.

>> Team Smith features Charlotte Smith of St. John’s Church.

>> Team Raldex features Niesha Miller.

>> Team Honda of South Carolina features Jessica Mullin and Bennie Reed.

>> Team Richardson features Brad Richardson of Florence Place.

>> Team Webster features George Webster of SFC Credit Union.

>> Team Echols features Les Echols of the Greater Florence Chamber of Commerce.

>> Team Deaver featuring Kevin Deaver of Black Mule Printing.

>> Team Humphrey featuring Frankie Humphrey of Wilson High School.

Christina Lawson, director of the literacy council, said the lip sync battle is a major fundraiser for the council. She added that the council receives some assistance as a partnering agency of the United Way of Florence County.

She said the goal of the fundraiser is to raise $30,000 for the council.

Tickets can be purchased for $50 each by visiting lipsyncflorence.com and clicking on tickets in the upper center of the page. Votes also can be cast for $1 each at lipsyncflorence.com by visiting the page and clicking on vote in the upper center of the page.

The Florence Area Literacy Council, a nonprofit organization, strives “to provide One-on-One adult literacy instruction, to build student capability and self-esteem through the use of trained volunteer tutors serving the greater Florence area.”

According to the council’s website, 33 percent of adults in Florence County are functionally illiterate.
