Coroner releases identity of child shot by another child in Coward

A GoFundMe page has been created to help with funeral expenses for the Powell family. In three hours, the page had raised a total of more than $1,000.

COWARD, S.C. – The Florence County Sheriff's Office said "no criminal charges are anticipated" after completing their investigation of a shooting that killed a 12-year-old boy in Coward on Tuesday, Aug. 2.

On Tuesday evening at approximately 5 p.m., deputies responded to a call at 4312 Circle Drive in Coward where two child victims had been shot. According to investigators an 11-year-old resident of the home had gained access to a handgun and accidentally discharged the weapon. A single round struck two victims, a seven-year-old and 12-year-old Mason Powell.

Powell was killed during the incident while the seven-year-old victim was transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. According to a release from the sheriff's office, the seven-year-old was treated and has since been released.

The three children were under the supervision of a 15-year-old sitter at the time of the shooting, the release stated.

Investigators with the sheriff's office concluded that "no foul play was involved." Following an autopsy on Powell's body, Florence County Coroner Keith von Lutcken also ruled the cause of death as accidental.
