“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

–Proverbs 3:5 & 6

Have you ever gotten lost following the direction of someone who claimed to know where they were going?

You had never been to the place you were going to, but they assured you that they knew exactly where it was and even how long it would take to get there. While traveling along, you notice that it’s taking longer than you were told and that the person giving the directions was beginning to act unsure of the way.

I’ve admittedly been on both sides of this scenario, and it was unenjoyable to say the least. It proved to be very frustrating and often expensive.

Direction is defined as “guidance or supervision of action or conduct; an explicit instruction or assistance in pointing out the proper route.”

In these two short but powerful verses, the writer says we must first fully trust the Lord.

Next, we’re not to depend on our own understanding of life’s issues, problems and situations that we face often on a daily basis.

Finally, we should humble ourselves by acknowledging Him so that He can give us the right direction.

Humilityis defined as a low degree of thought or thinking. When was the last time you’ve practiced true and sincere humility?

Nevertheless, it is our responsibility as people of faith to know and practice true humility in order to receive Godly direction.

As I look at many of the issues and conditions of today, it seems as if the receiving good and sound direction can at times be very difficult to find. For example, we now live in the age of the GPS (Global Positioning System), which sometimes may still end up getting us misdirected and even lost.

However, when I think about GPS, the first letter in GPS would represent God. He always knows our exact position and has the system in place to get us to our destination on time, every time!

I’m reminded of a song I was taught when I was a little boy that says, “He’s got the whole world in His hands. He’s got my mother and father, sister and brother, babies and all of us. He’s got the whole world in His hands.” He is the originator of Global, because he’s the maker and in charge of the globe.

Today in homes, government, society or even the houses of worship, we need clear and precise direction.

I realize that sometimes we can be distracted, disillusioned, disappointed and even discouraged when looking at the things going on around us. Many times it causes us to lose our direction and focus.

However, Proverbs 37:5 lets us know that when we “commit our way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.”

Commitment and trust are essential values that should always be exemplified in the community of faith.

Blessing and peace always.
