4. 2011 Southern 500
All Cup drivers remember their first win.
The field, as well as the entire crowd at Darlington Raceway that Saturday night, will remember Regan Smith.
Oh, and that postrace altercation between Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch.
But first, there was Smith’s win after almost winning in 2008 at Talladega.
On this night, Smith gambled on old tires, staying out on caution with nine laps remaining. That enabled him to take the lead and hold off Carl Edwards in overtime for the win.
"I'm not supposed to win this race," Smith said after that win. "I've never even had a top-five. I guess in this series, it just shows anyone can win."
But the excitement continued after the race when Harvick and Busch wrecked with Clint Bowyer. Harvick got in front of Busch’s car on the post-race pit road before going after Busch, who was still in his car. While that happened, Harvick’s driverless car went into the wall.
On a side note, that No. 78 driven by Smith that night was eventually taken over by Martin Truex Jr., who won the 2016 Southern 500 and 2017 Cup championship.
