FLORENCE, S.C. — Pee Dee resident wrestling fans will flock to the Florence Center to see WWE superstars from the SmackDown Live brand at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
Wrestler Sami Zayn will headline the event with a match against A.J. Styles in a cage match for the WWE Championship.
“This is a huge match,” Zayn said. “A.J. has kind of been the face of SmackDown Live, and it’s a great opportunity for us to put on a great show.”
Throughout his career, Zayn said he has typically tried to be a good guy, but his character is now exploring a little of what it’s like to be on the dark side.
“It’s been interesting exploring the other side of things,” Zayn said. “I’m still aligned with Kevin Owens, and our stories kind of link together.”
The WWE is split into two brands: Raw and SmackDown Live.
Zayn said the wrestlers who are part of the SmackDown Live roster are working hard to surpass the Raw brand.
“We’ve got a lot of hungry guys,” Zayn said. “Raw has been the big show forever, and we’re all working twice as hard to make the show as good as possible. We might all be working for the same company, but there’s a lot of competition, and that makes for a better product.”
In addition to Zayn and Styles, fans will have the opportunity to see Charlotte Flair, WWE legend Ric Flair’s daughter; Becky Lynch; Shinsuke Nakamura; Jinder Mahal; Bobby Roode; Baron Corbin; and many others.
Zayn said he and the other WWE superstars are excited to be traveling to Florence.
“When we come to Florence, that will be the first day of our travel rotation,” Zayn said. “That means we will all be fresh, and I think the show is going to be a rocking one. A lot of us really prefer the house shows, because there’s a lot of liberty that comes with it, and they’re just straight up wrestling shows. One way or another, you’re guaranteed a great show.”
