LAMAR – Lamar head coach J.R. Boyd’s return to the sideline was marred by a 42-0 loss to two-time defending AAA state champion Cheraw on Friday night.

The Silver Foxes only managed 109 yards of total offense while giving up 294 to Cheraw. Lamar was behind 28-0 after the first half.

Lamar was led on offense by Jonathan Dargan, who had 52 yards on eight carries. Anthony McAllister had 34 yards on 11 carries. McAllister also led the defense with eight tackles, followed by Chris People, who had seven tackles.

“We didn’t play well at all,” Boyd said on Monday. “I told (the team) it was like a log chain. As long as each link holds, the chain is fine. But, if any of the links break, it all comes falling down.”

Boyd was, however, pleased with several plays the team made. He said there was several plays in which the team executed properly, and that showed promise for the future. He added special teams showed some bright spots as well.

“We can’t continue to (play) like that,” said Boyd of the team’s performance. “We have to make sure we are in proper place to make a play.”

Boyd said the performance was an overall failure by the team as a whole. The team will continue to practice and work on the problems that arose during the game.
Lamar(0-1) will host Andrews Friday at 7:30 p.m. in its second game of the season.
