Season over for Post 1

After being nipped by Sumter on Friday, the comeback kids of Post 1 were at it again Saturday against Goose Creek in an elimination game at American Legion Field. Only this time, Florence’s rally and season fell one run short.

For the better part of two weeks, the Florence legion baseball team rode an emotional postseason high with improbable come-from-behind wins against Conway, Greenwood and Irmo. Post 1 finally hit the wall Friday in the form of Sumter’s Matt Price.

For the second night in a row, and for more times this season than anyone can probably remember, Florence used a late-inning rally to earn a 16-15 victory against Irmo and another shot at Sumter in tonight’s marquee 8 p.m. matchup.

Lake City scored five runs in the first two innings, then endured a Greenwood rally to pull out a 9-7 victory Thursday in an elimination game in the American Legion State tournament.

Florence’s coaches and players were among those gathered at the civic center for a banquet to officially kick off the American Legion baseball state tournament at Legion Field. The ceremony gave Post 1 coach Derick Urquhart a unique opportunity to reflect on both his role in bringing the tournament to Florence, and on his team’s journey there.

FLORENCE — Post 1 has found out its opponent for the first day of the American Legion state tournament, which begins Wednesday in Florence.

Sumter blanks Lake City

Tyler Christman struck out 16 while Travis Witherspoon and Qunetrell Nelson each homered as Sumter defeated Lake City 17-0 in eight innings to win the best-of-five series 3-1.

Post 1 scores twice late to beat Conway

As host for the American Legion baseball state tournament, Florence Post 1 knew it would be playing next week at Legion Field. But, coach Derek Urquhart said, there’s nothing like earning your way in.

Post 1 fans have seen some big comebacks this season at American Legion Field. And save a controversial ninth inning on Thursday, they might have seen another one.

With home-field advantage and a pitching-weary Conway team, Post 1 was hoping to take an early lead in its second-round American Legion playoff series. Conway did its part with a five-error performance, leading to seven unearned runs and a near gift-wrapped win.

MANNING — With pitching stretched thin as it always is in the playoffs, Post 1 coach Derick Urquhart turned to Dale Sylvester to eat up some innings in game four.

Post 1 a win away from advancing

Florence Post 1 got its first shutout of the season Friday night, blanking Beaufort 5-0 in the American Legion state playoffs.
The win gives Post 1 a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series. Florence will look to close out the series tonight at West Florence High School. Game time is 7 p.m.

Post 1 starter Chris Wallace was taken out of Tuesday’s first-round American Legion playoff game after seven innings because of a blood blister on his finger. It was the only blemish Wallace had all night.

Legion baseball: Post 1 clinches No. 2 seed from League III

Cody Ritch and Landis Lane each drove in three runs as Florence Post 1 clinched the second seed in League III with a 17-2 rout of Cheraw in seven innings on Thursday in American Legion baseball.

Legion notebook: Florence likes spot heading into Legion playoffs

As with every season, Post 1 coach Derick Urquhart knew beating out Sumter for the League III title was going to be a tall order.
But Florence’s dominance against the rest of the league still has them right where they want to be, Urquhart said, as Post 1 has already sewn up the second seed in League III.

Post 1 has eyes on No. 2 seed

With both teams already in the postseason, Tuesday’s American Legion matchup between Florence and Bishopville was a battle for position in League III.
And thanks to a 14-run, 15-hit attack, Post 1 now finds itself in very good position for a second seed. John Taylor, Cody Ritch and Patrick Mincey each drove in three runs en route to a 14-6 win over Post 29.

Young players inspire Post 5 to take big win from Aynor

After leading Aynor Post 81 by a score of 3-0 into the fourth inning, Marion’s Post 5 fizzled with a collapse of pitching and defense that allowed Aynor to take a lead for the first time of the night, 4-3. Ross White, the starting pitcher, was running out of gas and began walking in runners.
