FLORENCE — Francis Marion women’s basketball coach Heather Macy has announced that 6-foot forward Tenisha Howze of Lancaster will attend FMU this fall and join the Patriot basketball team for 2008-09.
Howze is a graduate of Lancaster High School, where she played for coach Ronnie Robinson.
This past season, she averaged 9.0 points, 10 rebounds, 5.0 blocks, and 3.0 steals per game. A two-time all-region selection, she was also named her squad’s defensive player of the year for both her junior and senior years.
Howze also earned all-tournament team honors each of the past three years at the Comporium Christmas Tournament.
“Tenisha’s best basketball is ahead of her,” Macy said. “She has the athletic ability to help us with rebounding and post defense. We are looking forward to working with her to expand and refine her game.”
Macy lost six seniors off last season’s 21-9 squad that captured a share of the Peach Belt Conference regular-season championship and earned a bid to the NCAA Division II national tournament.
Howze will be one of seven newcomers to this year’s Patriot squad.

FMU women’s soccer announces schedule
FLORENCE — The Francis Marion women’s soccer team, entering its second season as an NCAA Division I independent, has released its 2008 schedule. The slate, which includes 12 matches against teams which posted winning marks in 2007 and five squads that competed in last year’s NCAA Tournament, is arguably the toughest ever assembled for the Patriots.
Francis Marion will also participate in two regular-season tournaments: the Carolina Cup in Columbia at South Carolina’s Stone Stadium and the Mountaineer Invitational at Appalachian State.
FMU coach Marty Beall welcomes back 13 letter winners, including six starters, from last season’s 10-7-1 squad.
That marked the team’s 12th season with double-digit victories in its 13-year history.
The Patriots will play one exhibition match at East Tennessee State on Aug. 15.
The squad will open its regular season on Aug. 22 at Charleston Southern University.
The opening nine regular-season opponents on this year’s slate all recorded winning marks in 2007 and boasted a combined .646 winning percentage.
Last season, FMU finished as the 15th highest scoring team in NCAA Division I, scoring 45 goals for a 2.50 goals per match average.
