Quarterbacks Will Richardson and Zach MacDowall came into Coastal Carolina’s third scrimmage of the fall looking to out perform on another in the battle for the starting role.
By the time the clock had stopped at Brooks Stadium, neither had made anymore head way than when they put on the pads.
With only fourteen days to go before the Chanticleers face their first Football Bowl Series opponent at Penn State, the only certainty behind center is, there will be a quarterback.
“If we play today, Will would be our starter,” said Coach David Bennett. “He’s a senior and his brother (Wally) played there.”
The sentimental favorite once again came out of the gates slow during the scrimmage, going four and out of the first two drives.
“I couldn’t get it going early, but Zach was able to lead them down the field for a score,” said Richardson. “We’re just kind of feeding off of one another right now, picking up each others slack.”
MacDowall came out on top of his game, on the opening drive he hooked up with junior Scott Fambrough for a 45 yard touchdown connection. Then the Wake Forest transfer came back on the ensuing drive to find sophomore Eric O’Neal for a 21 yard touchdown.
“I felt good out there, my timing is getting better, and I feel we still have some work to do, but I think were ready,” said MacDowall.
Being ready at Brooks Stadium is a far cry from the expected 110,000 Nittany Lion fans expected at Beaver Stadium. For the second consecutive scrimmage, the CCU coaching staff blared marching band music, cheering, and a roar to simulate the crowd affect. This forced the Chants offense again to work on hand signals and the silent count.
“We can’t even come close to simulating what were going to go there up there,” said Bennett. “They’ll have the largest crowd in college.”
Richardson who is slated as the number one quarterback on the depth chart right now and would start for the Chants went 8 of 13 for 96 yards, and 2 touchdowns today. His counterpart was 9 of 13 for 173 yards, 3 touchdowns and an interception.
CCU will hold its final preparation scrimmage this Wednesday at 4 p.m. in Conway.
