Stimulus money for Interstate-73 could come sooner than expected. District Commissioner Danny Isaac proposed Wednesday that about $150 million of stimulus money SCDOT will get for interstate resurfacing, instead be evenly divided among the six congressional districts. The districts could then spend money outside their district if they choose. Isaac would then suggest that the 1st and 6th districts be combined for I-73.

For decades, Eastern Carolina leaders have worked hard to bring an interstate through the Pee Dee and to the Grand Strand. Getting the billions of dollars needed to build I-73 has always been the biggest hurdle and highway proponents thought they were making pretty steady progress until the past couple of weeks. That’s when those leaders say they hit a real brick wall, one that was completely unexpected.
That brick wall now appears to be crumbling, but for leaders like Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce President Brad Dean, the past couple of weeks have been filled with twists and turns that have the makings of a T.V. drama.
