Thousands are expected this weekend to participate in the Lumbee Tribe’s 40th Homecoming events.

Jamie Oxendine is a proud member of the Lumbee Tribe and has been attending homecoming events for 15 years.

Born in raised in Laurinburg, North Carolina he moved to Ohio after graduation.

Every year he travels more than 600 miles from Ohio to North Carolina for the annual homecoming events.

“I think if you see homecoming from a general perspective it’s like a large festival or a very extended family reunion,” Oxendine said.

With gas prices hitting record highs across the county, Oxendine said he had to make sacrifices before making the journey.

“This is something that I have to do to show my love of my culture and my love of my people,” Oxendine said.

Several events are scheduled throughout the weekend.
