COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) _ Barack Obama is launching the South Carolina leg of his presidential campaign.

The Illinois senator’s campaign and the Democratic Party held a sign-up program for volunteers Tuesday night at the party’s headquarters in Columbia.

It’s the first sign of Obama’s promised 50-state campaign in this typically red state. Obama recruited thousands of South Carolina volunteers to win the primary here. His campaign hopes to force Republican John McCain to spend money and time campaigning in states that have gone Republican in presidential elections for decades.
