LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Superintendent failing students in Marlboro

Dear Editor:
Published: July 25, 2008

The students of Marlboro County are suffering because of a $125,00 mistake made by school board members voting to hire Alisa Goodman as our Superintendent of schools last year.

She has consistently made decisions that show her lack of executive experience.

Ms. Goodman and her administration team have done nothing to improve the environment, image or perception of our schools.

She has surrounded herself with those in the community with the ability to make $500,000 donations to her pet projects and in this county.

Our superintendent appears to be unwilling to begin a true dialogue with all segments of the community on improving education in the county.

The superintendent and her team have completely failed children with disabilities and special needs.

Currently at Bennettsville Middle School special needs students are housed and served in a building with worse than third-world conditions. It is shameful that our students with the most challenges have to deal with such a depressing learning environment. It is obvious that while we go through this “guinea pig” style of decision-making and leadership, our children will suffer under her leadership.

Parents, we must become more involved with every phase of our children’s education.

We must become accountable and hold our leadership accountable. No improvements can be made without us. If we sit back, we will remain a district that is regionally perceived as athletics first and academics last under Ms. Goodman’s leadership. Find a way to get involved with your child’s school.

So Mr. McNeil is unhappy and wants to “rant and rave”. Where has he been for the past number of years when Marlboro Schools were failing with previous chairman and superintendent? If he thinks he sees it now, he should have seen it then. Perhaps if he and others worked with Ms. Goodman to make things better at Marlboro Schools, there would be NO time to complain. Mr. McNeil, do you want to be part of the solution or continue to be part of the problem?

I think what Mr. McNeil wants is for himself or others to be able to appoint and place certain people where they wish them to be. Marlboro County schools suffer from the same problems they have had for Forty Years. Little discipline and parents that do not control their children, spend time with them and help them with their studies. Also Marlboro county has trouble keeping good teachers because of certain standards in Marlboro County.  Marlboro County Schools waste a tremendous amount of money by moving people up rather than out when they should.I realize it is hard to get rid of some people because of the community. But it is ridiculous if the rumor is true about a person being fired over having a sexual relationship with a person of responsibilty and that person of responsibilty being promoted.
Marlboro County has wonderful people like everywhere else but most are so poor and it being a rural county like other counties suffer from industry and lack of jobs.We also suffer from a generation of single parent familes, poor work habits and the inabilty to move ahead. This is just my opinion and I am sure others have a different one. By the way Marlboro County seems always to lose its best minds because of nothing to offer young couples and I do believe this fits Mr. McNeil and it is good he has come back but he needs to spell out all the facts.
