Thumbs up to Palmetto First Federal Credit Union for contributing more than $1,600 to the Florence Area Humane Society for its animal shelter. The credit union raised the money by receiving donations from employees and customers. Angie Burr, CEO of Palmetto First Federal Credit Union, presented the check June 6 to humane society board members Lela Joseph and John Germain. Thumbs up also to the S&M NuTec for donating 100 bags of its Greenies Pill Pockets to the Florence Area Humane Society Animal Shelter. The shelter received 50 bags of Greenies Pill Pockets for cats and 50 bags for dogs. The donation of the hollow-shaped treats are meant to help keep the animals compliant in taking their medication until they find new homes. While the humane society is looking forward to opening a no-kill animal shelter next year, it still needs funds and supplies to care for the animals it houses now. The shelter is located at 1007 Stockade Drive, off National Cemetery Road in Florence and is open from noon to 5 p.m. every day except Wednesday and Sunday. Call (843) 669-2921 for details on how to help or adopt an animal. Those who adopt the animals will get a $25 coupon toward the cost of spaying or neutering each dog or cat, which is required by state law for all animals adopted from a shelter.

Thumbs up to the S.C. Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics Foundation for its recent receipt of two grants. The foundation received a $30,000 research grant from the W.C. English Foundation to benefit the School’s Summer Program for Research Interns, a graduation requirement for all students at the Governor’s School in Hartsville. The program is a statewide outreach program designed to pair the school’s students with scientist mentors in research and development labs across the state for a six-week internship in many fields, including biomedical, nanotechnology and alternative fuels engineering. Non-Governor’s School students from other public, private or homeschooled settings are encouraged to participate the program, as well, after a detailed application process. The foundation also received a $5,000 contribution for residential need-based scholarships from AT&T-SC. The annual fee to attend the public, residential school is $1,125 a year; 20 percent of students require partial or full scholarships.

Glynn Willis, Boys & Girls Club of the Pee Dee Area board member, offers this: “Thumbs up to the Florence Boys & Girls Club and all those in the community that have helped with the much needed additions and renovations to the club’s building; as many as 300 of our children throughout the Florence community may now be served at the Boys & Girls Club. The club held a special preview and grand opening recently to showcase what folks working together can achieve and to thank the community for its continued support. I would encourage those that weren’t in attendance to go visit your Florence Boys & Girls Club. The new addition and renovation to the existing building is a great investment in our children’s future. I would encourage our community to support a vision of extending the Boys & Girls Club into other areas of Florence.”
