McLeod Health has been awarded $300,000 by The Duke Endowment in a grant to bring digital mammography to McLeod Medical Center-Darlington and McLeod Medical Center-Dillon.

The funds will be used to purchase and install a digital computed radiography (CR) reader for the two medical centers. The CR digital readers offer the benefits of digital mammography without replacing the x-ray, or film, mammography units in place at the two facilities. Instead of traditional film processing, the CR digital reader will provide each location with digital film processing.

While standard film mammography creates an image directly on film, digital mammography takes an electronic image and stores it directly in a computer.

Digital mammography holds many benefits. The images are extremely clear and detailed with improved contrast, and less time is required to process the images during a digital mammography exam, compared with traditional film imaging.
