A Lake City man died Saturday after he was struck by a train, Florence County Coroner M.G. “Bubba” Matthews said.

Nathaniel McFadden Jr., 35, died at the scene, he said.

The crash happened at about 4:24 a.m. in Lake City, about 150 feet from the Fairview and Church streets crossing.

Two train engineers saw the man standing in the train’s path and sounded the horn but McFadden didn’t move, Matthews said.

The man stood straight up and then bent down shortly before impact, Matthews said.

It is unclear why the man was didn’t move.
