A Florence man was taken into custody Wednesday after he broke into a store and assaulted one of the deputies who arrested him, Florence County Sheriff’s Lt. Brett Camp said.

Donald Ray Capehart, 46, of 607 Jeffords St. is charged with two counts of third-degree burglary and assaulting a police officer, Florence County Detention Center bookings reports show.

The incident happened Tuesday night at 1650. E Palmetto St. when deputies responded to an alarm call from the business and found two doors of the building had been broken.

Deputies searched the building and found the suspect behind a closed door. A confrontation ensued during which the suspect repeatedly struck the deputy in the chest with his hands.

Authorities used a Taser to bring the suspect under control and arrest him, Camp said. The officer received minor injuries and is expected to recover, Camp said.

Capehart remains in custody at the Florence County jail under a $6,000 surety bond.
