A Mayesville man and Sumter woman have been charged in connection with the sexual assault of a 9-year-old girl, according to a State Law Enforcement Division press release.
Wayne Atkinson, a former Lee County sheriff’s deputy and convicted sex offender, is charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor.
Atkinson, 56, of 84 Robin Lane, is accused of holding a gun to the girl’s head and making her perform sex acts on him on or about July 24 to Aug. 18 in a bedroom at his home, SLED warrants show. He is also accused of threatening the child not to disclose information about the alleged crime.
Shirley Jackson, 51, of 2661 Tindal Road, is believed to be Atkinson’s girlfriend and the victim’s foster parent, according to the SLED release. It’s alleged she would drive the child to Atkinson’s home, placing her in his care.
Jackson is charged with unlawful conduct toward a child.
The investigation was started at the request of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, according to SLED.

SC laws need to change to better protect children from abuse by people like these two. The woman also deserves life in prison without parole as she abused the trust given to her by the state to protect and help this beautiful little girl. The man should not only get life in prison without parole but should be castrated. Crimes against children need to be stopped and stiffer penalties enforced.
