The number of speeding citations Horry County Police issued nearly doubled during this year’s fall motorcycle rally compared to 2007.
This year, county officials say, they issued 682 citations for speeding during the October rally compared to 348 last year.
They also saw an increase in driver’s license violations and equipment violations, among other items.
Sgt. Rob Kegler with the Horry County Police Department says the main reason for the higher numbers is that the police department changed how it patrolled the event this year.
He says officers didn’t set up stationary patrols as they’ve done in the past, but instead formed task forces that moved from location to location.
The city of Myrtle Beach has put several new laws on the books to curtail the rallies, but those ordinances are just in effect within the city limits. Horry County has yet to make a decision on what, if any, action it will take concerning the new laws. Count on more coverage of the rally wrap-up on News13.
