It’s hard to believe with the high price of gas, that anyone could give it away for free.

But the Waccamaw Baptist Association and other individuals dug into their pockets and pulled out $10,000 for gas. But it’s only for bikers.

Volunteer and director of the Intracoastal Outreach said, “Today we’re out here filling up guys tanks and having an opportunity to welcome them to Myrtle Beach and say thanks for coming to visit our city. Most importantly thanks for allowing us the opportunity to share with them about Jesus Christ who means the most to us.”

Besides getting free gas, bikers are also driving away with a free Bible which many say is worth the cause.

Biker Pam Yeatman from Baltimore, Maryland said, “We’ll I thought what was the catch? But I think it’s a good message. I think it’s a good idea.”

Biker Steve Fogleman was searching for a place to eat when he saw the signs for free gas. He said every dollar he can save on fuel helps.

“It’s even bad on bikers,” Fogleman said.

But for biker Derick Smith, it’s not about the free gas.

“It’s not what it’s all about. For some of these people it’s what it’s all about. But it’s not,” Smith said.

“Just like giving away a free tank of gas, it can’t be bought. We’re buying it for them. We’re paying that price the same way Christ paid that price for our life and said hey, I died on the cross for you and I’ve forgiven you of your sins in your life,” Wood said.

The effort is received so well, Waccamaw Baptist Association officials say they’ll probably run out of gas money before the end of Bike week.

Each biker gets $10 worth of gas or are topped off.

Officials say a total of $1,600 worth of gas was given away to about 225 bikers Monday.

Free gas will be available at several gas stations until this Saturday. They plan to be back out at the same CITGO location Tuesday. Once again, it’s located at the corner of South Ocean Boulevard and 17 Business highway, across from the old air force base.

Some volunteers pumping gas came all the way from Sturgis, South Dakota to help. Volunteers said 18 people received Christ during the effort on Monday.
