Gloria Magwood
Gloria Magwood, 72, died on Nov. 16, 2008. She was born in Walterboro to the late James and Eunis Brown and attended Ruffin High School in Walterboro.
Her husband was the late Thaddeus Magwood and they migrated to New York City after they wed. Their children are Matthew, Thaddeus, Eullie and Marilyn Magwood and Peggy Vargas and Diana Ford.
A funeral was on Nov. 21, 2008 at Frank R. Bell Funeral Home at Brooklyn, N.Y. Interment was at Forest Green Cemetery at Morganville, N.J.
Cleola Anderson
Cleola Thomas Anderson, 69, died on Dec. 18, 2008. Her parents were the late Christine Thomas Alford and Harry Thomas and her brothers and sisters were Margaret Wade of Marion, Charles Thomas of Hinesville, Ga., James Thomas of Staten Island, N.Y., and Wilbert Thomas of California.
She was educated in the public schools of New York City and earned a bachelor’s of arts degree from the Univerisity of Massachusetts and a master’s of arts degree from Adelphi University.
She taught in the New York City Public Schools System for 15 years and later at the Robert F. Kennedy Childcare Center, until her retirement. For 32 years, she was a devoted member of Solid Rock Baptist Church of New York City.
Upon returning to Marion, she attended Bethlehem Baptist Church of Marion, where her funeral was conducted on Dec. 23, 2008, with the Rev. H.K. Phillips, pastor, eulogist. Interment was at Devotion Gardens.
She is survived by her children, Michael Thomas of Marion, Eric Anderson of Brooklyn, Lisa Duke of Queens, N.Y., and Valerie Anderson of Westbury, N.Y.
Mary Jouise Jones
Mary Louise Jones, 69, died on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2008. She was born in Aynor to the late Charlie Vander Jones and Lillian Irene Hannah Jones and attended Horry County Public Schools.
She graduated from Whittemore High School in 1958. At an early age, she joined St. John Freewill Baptist Church of Aynor, where a funeral was conducted on Dec. 26,
Bishop Bobby Vereen, pastor, was the eulogist. Interment was at the church cemetery.
After high school, Mrs. Jones moved to the Coconut Grove section of Miami and joined St. James Baptist Church. She was a loyal member of the Order of the Eastern Star for over 30 years and retired from Burdines Department Store in 2001 after 31 years of service.
She was the mother of Teresa Sims of Mullins and she was the sister of Bobbie Jean Davis of Rains, Rubie Myers of Aynor and Thomas J. Jones of Marion.
Ethel H. Nesbit
Ethel Henderson Nesbit, 76, widow of Chalmers Fred Nesbit, died Friday, Dec. 19, 2008 in Marion County Medical Center after an illness.
Born on Dec. 26, 1931 in Horry County, she was a daughter of the late Hinson and Lottie Small Henderson and was a homemaker and a member of Mullins-Marion Freewill Baptist Church.
Surviving Mrs. Nesbit are a son, Mitchell Tumolo of Mullins; a sister, Kathleen Bilton of Mullins; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by six sisters and a brother.
Services were on at 2 p.m., Dec. 21, in the Chapel of Cox-Collins Funeral Home, with the Rev. Neil Hinson and the Rev. Scott Bass officiating. Burial followed in State Cemetery.
Anne Wallace
Graveside service for Anne Wood Wallace, 71, was at 11 a.m. Dec. 14, in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Columbia. Mrs. Wallace died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2008, after a long bout with cancer.
Born in Gaffney, she was a daughter of the late T.V. Wood and Annie Belle Smith Wood. She volunteered at Richland Memorial Hospital for 30 years. Mrs. Wallace was a member of First Baptist Church and Bible Survey Sunday School Class.
Surviving are her husband of 52 years, William C. “Bill” Wallace; son and daughter-in-law Dan and Pam Wallace of Gilbert; grandchildren, Blythe Wallace and Zane Wallace of Gilbert; brother and sister-in-law Jimmy Irene Wood of Gaffney; and sister and brother-in-law, Rachael and Roy Henderson of Florida. She was predeceased by a son, William C. “Billy” Wallace Jr.

J.B. “Bunk” Stackhouse
J.B. “Bunk” Stackhouse, 94, died Dec. 22, 2008 in his residence following a long illness. He was born on June 11, 1914 in Mullins. He was the son of the late Eva Bryant and George Bennett Stackhouse and was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Lorine Moody Stackhouse; one brother George Bennett Stackhouse Jr.; and a sister, Elizabeth Stackhouse Everett.
Mr. Stackhouse attended the University of South Carolina, where he was a member of the Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity. He was a devoted lifelong member of Macedonia United Methodist Church, where he served in many capacities. He was a founding member of the Mullins Jaycees, a member of the Civitan Club and served on the National Chamber of Commerce committee.
He founded The Investment Life and Trust Company in April of 1956 and served as its president until his retirement in 1984.
He is survived by a son, Jim Stackhouse of Sarasota, Fla; two daughters, Marianne Stackhouse of Mullins, Susan Foil and husband Mark of Rock Hill; two grandchildren, Mark Alan Foil Jr. and Lorie Anne Foil; two great-grandchildren Kevin and Patrick Mock; one brother, John W. Stackhouse of Moorehead, N.C.; and a sister, Anne Stackhouse Rogers of Pawleys Island.
A graveside service was on Dec. 23 in Cedardale Cemetery, Mullins, with the Rev. Kem Thomas officiating. Donations may be made to Macedonia United Methodist Church, 402 N. Main Street, Mullins, 29574 or to Epworth Children’s Home, P.O. Box 50466 Columbia, 29250.
France McRae Cribb
Frances McRae Cribb, 85, died Monday, Dec. 22, 2008 in Marion County Medical Center after an illness. Services were on Dec. 24 in Marion Presbyterian Church. Entombment followed at Palmetto Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Crib was born in Georgetown County, a daughter of the late Lamar McRae and Annie Richardson McRae. She is predeceased by her husband, Ronal Cribb and two sisters, Boyd Cottingham and Evelyn Edwards. She worked in the engineer department at Southern Bell for 37 years and was a member of the Bellsouth Pioneers. She was a member of Marion Presbyterian Church and graduate of Marion High School.
Surviving her are her sons, Ronal L. Cribb and his wife Frankie, of Marion; David M. Cribb of Hilton Head; daughter, Linda Carter Crawford and her husband Nicky of Brunson, S.C.; brothers, Richard C. McRae and Homer L. McRae, both of Marion; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Annette Byrd
Annette Byrd, 54, died Monday, Dec. 22, 2008 in McLeod Medical Center after an illness. Services were on Dec. 26 in Reedy Creek Baptist Church. Burial followed in the Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Byrd was born in Marion, a daughter of the late Rowland Byrd and Mae Belle Demery Byrd. She was a member of Reedy Creek Baptist Church of Marion and graduate of Myrtle Beach high school.
Surviving her are her brother, Rowland Byrd Jr. and his wife Garnette of Conway; sisters, Jean Byrd Tyler of Marion and Dianne Byrd Whitley and her husband Randy of Myrtle Beach; and many nieces and nephews.

Zack Boatwright
Zack Boatwright, 86, husband of Sidney Boatwright, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008 at McLeod Medical Center in Dillon after an illness.
Mr. Boatwright was a veteran of World War II and was retired from Pee Dee Ceramics of Marion. He was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church in Marion and was predeceased by his parents, Gatlin and Addie Perritt Boatwright and eight brothers and sisters.
Surviving Mr. Boatwright, in addition to his wife, are two sons, Wendell Boatwright of Dillon and John Wayne Boatwright of Florence; two daughters: Judy Boatwright and Seina Boatwright, both of Longs; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A funeral was on Dec. 27 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Smith-Collins Funeral Home of Marion. Burial was in Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Ernest E. Ford
Ernest Edward Ford, 95, died on Monday, Dec. 22, 2008, in his home following an extended illness. Born on May 20, 1913, in Kinston, N.C., he was a son of the late Seth D. and Eula Norris Ford.
Mr. Ford attended North Carolina State University in Raleigh and graduated from the School of Savings and Loan at the University of Indiana in 1957. He was vice president of Home Federal Savings and Loan in Greensboro, N.C., from 1945 until 1966, and president of Pioneer Savings and Loan in Whiteville, N.C. from 1966 until 1980.
Mr. Ford was an active member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in North Myrtle Beach, where he served on many committees. He was a charter and former member of the Christ Methodist Church in Greensboro, N.C. and former member of the Whiteville United Methodist Church. He was a Past District Governor of the Civitan Club in North Carolina, was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award given by the Boy Scouts of America, was a Kentucky Colonel, a Mason and Shriner and a member of the Surf Golf and Beach Club.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley H. Ford; two sons, Ernest E. Ford Jr. and wife, Lynn, of Ponte Vedra, Fla., and James T. Ford and wife, Dena, of Harrisburg, N.C.; three stepchildren, Sharon Beeson Beaty and husband, Dudley, of Bennettsville, Jay Beeson and Laurie L. Beeson both of Mullins; three grandchildren, Christopher Ford, Keyser F. Russ and James T. Ford II; and one step-grandchild, John Crosland Beaty.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Bailey Tice Ford; three brothers, Clarence, Seth and Zell Ford; and a sister, Mae Belle F. Curl.
A memorial service was conducted at 11 a.m., Dec. 24, 2008, in Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steve Brown officiating. Memorials may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church, Building Fund, P.O. Box 373 North Myrtle Beach, 29597.
Carita McCray
Carita Eileen McCray, 68, died on Dec. 5, 2008 in a Florence hospital. She was born in Philadelphia to the late John and Carita Churchville.
She attended the public schools of Philadelphia and was the sister of John Churchville. In 1974, she moved to Marion and became a longtime member of New Bethel Apostolic Church at Dillon, where she served on the Usher Board and the Women’s Committee. She recently joined Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church at Penderboro.
She was the mother of Robin Lee McCray of Philadelphia, Dale Patrick McCray of Greensboro, N.C., and Kendell Page of Florence. Her best friend was Juanita Pee. A graveside service was on Wednesday, Dec. 10 at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
Teleta Baldwin
Teleta Whitmore Baldwin, 29, died on Dec. 8, 2008. Her parents were Clarence and Izola Whitmore of Mason, Tenn. She attended Fayetteware High School at Summerville, Tenn. and was a member of the Kentucky Job Corps.
She married Rodney Baldwin of Marion and was the mother of the late Zayreayh Baldwin. Her brothers and sisters were Roscoe Lewis, Willie Whitmore, Stacey Whitmore, Kenneth Whitmore, Tangela Whitmore, Jacqueline White, and Dana Whitmore, all of Memphis.
She is survived by her children, Rodney Jr. and Rodarleous, both of Marion, and Dana and Tyesha Whitmore, both of Mason, Tenn.A funeral was on Dec. 13 at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church at Penderboro, with the Rev. Dr. A.C. Robinson, pastor, officiating. Interment was at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church Cemetery at Mason, Tenn.
Zayreayh Baldwin
Princess Zayreayh Naryah Baldwin, 5, died on Dec. 8, 2008. She was the daughter of Rodney Baldwin and the late Teleta Whitmore Baldwin and attended McMillan Pre-School.
Her brothers and sisters were Rodney Jr. and Rodarleous, both of Marion, and Dana and Tyesha Whitmore both of Mason, Tenn. A funeral was on Dec. 13, 2008 at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church of Penderboro, with the Rev. Dr. A.C. Robinson, pastor, officiating. Interment was at Jackson & Daughters Cemetery at Marion.
Annie Mae Hunt
Annie Mae Murray Cooper Hunt, 74, was the daughter of the late Frank and Lillie Mae Rogers Murray. She was the widow of Allen Cooper and John Hunt and the sister of Donald Murray of West Chester, Penn., and Alphonso Murray of Mullins.
An outstanding student, she was the 1952 salutatorian of Marion County Training School and received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Natural Science, with a minor in English from Claflin College at Orangeburg and a Master of Education from Francis Marion University at Florence.
As a professional educator in mathematics and science, she taught for over 30 years at Terrell’s Bay High School at Centenary, being named Teacher of the Year in 1996. She also taught at the Marion Alternative School. She taught Church School at Bethel and served on several boards and held many offices at her church. She was a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority.
She was the mother of Margaret Fay Bryant of Dallas, Ga., Allen Clifford “Tom” Cooper of Marion, Frank James Cooper of Columbia, Alexander Louis Cooper of Rock Hill, Ceasar Johnathan Hunt of Farmington Hill, Mich., Emerson Colect Hunt of Marion, John Davis Hunt of Raleigh, N.C., Dawnta Cooper of Charlotte and Elisha Colect Hunt of Marion.
She was a faithful member of Bethel United Methodist Church, where a funeral was conducted on Friday, Dec. 12, 2008. The Rev. Shawn V. Bell, pastor, officiated and interment was at Devotion Gardens.
Luceal Phillips
Luceal Campbell Phillips was born in Dillon County on Jan. 28, 1924 to the late Dossie Ford and Hensley Campbell. She attended Dillon County Public Schools and was the widow of Elbert Phillips. At an early age, she joined St. John Baptist Church at Latta, where a funeral for her was conducted on Friday, Dec. 19, 2008, with the Rev. Williams J. Walker, pastor, officiating.
Interment was at Oakey Point Cemetery at Latta. She is survived by her children Hattie Bell Campbell of Latta, Helen Phillips of Nichols, Irene Thompson of Baltimore, Md., Lenon Bethea of Latta, Jeanette Reaves of Marion, Sylvia Lee of Mullins, Judy Brown of Marion and Priscilla Page of Myrtle Beach.
Loupenn Williamson
Loupenn Howard Williamson, “Muddy,” was born to the late Veronica and Armstrong Howard on May 5, 1921. She attended the public schools of Marion County and was employed by Marion Memorial Hospital, Marion Convalescent Center at Rains and SoPakCo at Mullins.
She married the late George Williamson and was widowed early in the marriage. She was the sister of Roosevelt and Eugene Howard, both of Mullins, Ruth Godbolt of Rains, Thelma Williams of Ariel’s Crossroads, Mary Sue Williams of Florence and Lela Mae Cunningham of Charlotte.
She is survived by her children George Jr., John, Robert, McKeiver, Randall Williamson and Bobbie Reaves. She joined the New Life Holiness Church and later joined Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church at Penderboro, where her funeral was conducted on Dec. 21, 2008, with The Rev. Dr. A.C. Robinson, pastor, eulogist. Interment was at Devotion Gardens.
