Holiday closes libraries for a few day
Marion County Libraries will be closed on Friday, July 3 and Saturday July 4. The normal library schedules resume on Monday, July 6.


Church to sponsor Women’s Conference
New Hope Missionary Baptist Church Missionary Society, Latta, will have a women’s conference beginning on July 4, at 8:30 a.m. with a prayer breakfast. Guest speaker for the event is Nina Bradley. The conference will conclude on July 5. The program will begin 10:45 a.m. and guest speaker will be Minister Kathy Charles, Florence. The public is invited.


Church ready for annual Friends and Family Day
The Centerville Missionary Baptist Church will have its annual Friends and Family Day services on July 5 at 11 a.m. Pastor William Norman Pee and the Officers and Members of Centerville Church are extending an invitation the public. Centerville Church is at 5211 Pennell Road, Centenary. For information, call Program Director Helen Perkins or Church Clerk Edna Davis-Pee at 362-2513.


Youth Revival 2009 is set in Latta
Everyone is nvited to attend Monument of Faith Outreach Ministries’ Youth Revival 2009 at 130 Whittington St. Latta, July 9-10 at 7 nightly. Guest speaker will be Kenny Hicks Jr., of Florence. For information, call (843) 453-8959.


Tri-County Male Choir to have appreciation weekend
The Tri-County Male Choir will have its Appreciation Weekend on July 11-12. A banquet will begin at 6 p.m. on July 11 in St. Paul Baptist Church, Mullins. Guest speaker will be Alonzo Porter. Contact Derrick Weeks for banquet tickets (433-9001). On Sunday, the program will begin at 4 p.m. and feature Jessie Hannah and the Gospel Singers, Second Chance, the Royal Lights, Six Silver Stars, and the Weeks Sisters. The public is invited to the free event.


Benefit Poker Run planned for Barrentine
Kenny Barrentine suffered a stroke that has left him unable to return to work. He is at home with his daughter caring for him. Because of her caring for her dad, she is unable to return to work. On July 18, a group of friends will be sponsoring a Poker Run with proceeds to help the Barrentines. Cost is $10 per hand, including food. An extra hand is $5 or just food is $5. There is a limit of two extra cards. Start and end is at The Stables in Little Rock, near Dillon. Registration is at 11 a.m. and bikes out is at 1 p.m. For information, call (843) 992-6123.


NAACP to have annual Woman of the Year program
The Marion County branch of the NAACP will have its annual Woman of the Year and Freedom Fund Banquet on July 24. A reception will be at 5 p.m. and the dinner begins at 6 p.m. Guest speaker will be Rep. Gilda Cobb-Hunter, Dist. 66. The theme is “We Have Come Too Far To Turn Back Now!” The event is in the Dr. A.C. Robinson Resource Center, 1333 Penderboro Road, Marion. Reservations are needed. Planetarium to present program
The Dooley Planetarium at Francis Marion University will present a program titled “Voyage to the Planets,” will be presented on Sunday, July 12. The program begins at 3 p.m. and admission is free. The planetarium, on the second floor of the Cauthen Educational Media Center, will open its doors at 2:30 p.m., and no admittance will be allowed once viewing begins. Since its opening in 1978, the planetarium has regularly shown public programs on the second and fourth Sundays of each month. Church to have ‘Hot Summer Nights’
Advent Episcopal Church in Marion is hosting “Hot Summer Nights” again, set for the 4th Wednesday of July and August. The first meeting is today. A light meal is served at 6:30 p.m. and a program starts at 7 p.m. This is always an enjoyable time of learning and socializing. Please come join us. Advent Episcopal Church is on Main Street in Marion, two doors South of the Post Office.


Food bank, clothing bank open to public
The St. James AME Church, (Ariel Crossroad) at 5333 South Highway 41, Marion opens its Food Bank from 2-6 p.m. every third Thursday in the month. Consumers are required to fill out an application at the initial visit. Call the Rev. Georgeann Pringle for information at (803) 817-4428, (843) 688-4072 or (843) 423-3832. The church also has a clothing closet available to the public. Contact Doris Green at (843) 230-3654 or Ruth Reed at (843) 423-6867 for an appointment or in the event of an emergency.


Men’s Day, 100 Men in Black program planned
The men of the Saint Paul Baptist Church have planned a two-day observance for their annual Men’s Day. The fellowship event will be July 24-26, beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Sunday worship will be at 10 a.m. Contact the Saint Paul Baptist Church, Inc., Mullins, the Rev. Mack T. Hines, pastor, for details.
