Hospitals need to pay more attention to the “surgical count”

Hospitals aren’t paying enough attention to the so-called “surgical count.“ 

That’s the standard count of all instruments used during surgery to make sure none are left in the body.

Investigators say the count is off in nearly 1 of every 8 operations, though the missing items are almost always found before any harm is done.
