Carolinas Hospital System acquires latest in mammography
Women who undergo routine mammograms at Carolinas Hospital System now have the latest diagnostic technology available, digital mammography, the organization announced this week.
Dan Coker Memorial Tournament raises $12,300 for Alzheimer’s research
The 2009 Dan Coker Memorial Golf Tournament raised $12,370 for the Alzheimer’s Associ-ation South Carolina Chapter. The money will go toward research for a cure for Alzheimer’s disease.
Malloy to receive Katie’s Heroes Award

Hartsville man arrested with 7 pounds of marijuana
Law enforcement officers with the Darlington County Multijurisdictional Task Force seized more than 7.1 pounds of marijuana with an estimated street value of more than $5,000, more than $2,000 in cash, firearms, two vehicles and a lawn maintenance business and arrested one in a drug raid on a Hartsville area residence Thursday morning.

Mental Health Association honors Rose Marie Newsom
Rose Marie Newsom was recently recognized by her peers on the Mental Health Association of Darlington County Board of Directors (MHADC) for her involvement with the organization.
A plaque was presented to Newsom at a board meeting for her years of service to the Mental Health Association and service on its board of directors. The board also decided to honor Newsom by sponsoring a room at the Durant Center in her name to recognize her 30 years of dedicated service.The structure housing the Durant Center was originally built by Newsom’s family as a home.

$32.5 million county budget gets final OK
Darlington County Council took just 10 minutes to hold public hearings on eight ordinances for a $32.5 million budget package for fiscal 2010 and give the measures final approval.
County unemployment climbs to 13.7 percent in May
Darlington County’s unemployment rate reached its highest level in nearly 16 years in May at 13.7 percent, an increase of 1.2 percentage points over April’s 12.5 percent, the S.C. Employment Security Commission reported Friday.

Mr. and Mrs. Victor Young of Florence and Mr. and Mrs. Larry Coates of Latta announce the engagement of their daughter, Christie Leigh Coates, to Kenneth Trevor Hicks, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Hicks of Hartsville.
The wedding will be Sept. 26, 2009. They will have a private outdoor wedding at Summer Hill Farms in Florence.

Shelly Holder of St. Luke United Methodist Church and the Rev. Tracy Hamilton of Tri-County Worship Center officiated at the ceremony. A reception was held at The Pavilion at Lawton Park.

Board OKs $6 million budget for new HHS gym
Construction of a new gymnasium for Hartsville High School is scheduled to start in early November with a goal of completion in time for the start of basketball season in 2010, the architect for the project told the Darlington County Board of Education Monday.

The group has been instrumental in building several Habitat for Humanity homes in Hartsville and Darlington and has helped numerous volunteer-based organizations that cater to the less fortunate in the community with projects.
