Dr. Mick Zais, the state’s superintendent of education, says public schools in South Carolina are “tremendously varied.” The state is home to some of the nation’s finest schools. It is also home to the fabled “Corridor of Shame,” and other pockets of educational inequity that represent some of the poorest examples of public education around.

In hopes of lessening the restrictive bond of school district lines, Zais has had his nose to the blackboard in his 18-plus months on the job pushing for charter school and school choice legislation, efforts he believes will grant schools more autonomy to diversify educational offerings and eliminate the one-size-fits-all curriculum. It is the central theme in his campaign for reform.
