LAKE CITY, S.C. — Archeologists contracted by the South Carolina Department of Transportation are continuing an archeological investigation at a site between Lake City and Johnsonville on U.S. Route 378.

The site was discovered in 2009 during a survey by TRC, the company contracted by SCDOT to do the survey, for a road-widening project. The survey crew was conducting shovel tests, 100 feet apart, of the 18-mile stretch of road when it was originally discovered. In 2010, Mona Grunden, senior archeologist of TRC, said further investigation showed the site was sensitive enough to need close, careful work.
