LAMAR, S.C. -- No passengers were on board an east-bound interstate bus when it crashed and burned on Interstate 20 near the mile-marker 129 rest area.

Cpl. Sonny Collins, South Carolina Highway Patrol, said the bus driver was able to safely get off the bus, which ran off the road and into the woods.

Darlington County firefighters responded and battled the fire, which was limited to one of the bus's rear inside tires smouldering, said Kenny Stratton, Darlington County Fire Chief.

The fire could have possibly been caused by friction, Stratton said.

Damage to the bus from the fire was minimal, though firefighters had to pop one of the back windows to vent smoke from the vehcle as they searched for the origin of the fire, Stratton said.

Stratton said the bus also suffered damage from running off the road, across a ditch and into the woods but overall said he thought the vehicle was salvageable.
