Dillon County authorities hope to know more about human remains found two weeks ago along State Line Road near Hamer by early next week, Dillon County Coroner Donnie Grimsley said.
The remains have been identified as those of a man, but Grimsley said he and Dillon County sheriff’s deputies are working to identify the man. Once they can identify him, Grimsley said, additional details will be released concerning the manner in which the man died.
A fisherman discovered the remains in a creek running from the Little Pee Dee River near South of the Border about 4:15 p.m. May 11, Dillon County Sheriff's Capt. Cliff Arnette said. The remains were so badly decomposed that investigators could not immediately determine a race or gender, he said.
Arnette said his office will continue working to identify the person and determine what happened to him. The State Law Enforcement Division is assisting in the investigation.
Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s office at (843) 774-1432 or the state Crime Stoppers hotline at (888) CRIME SC (274-6372). Callers need not reveal their identities.
