QUINBY, S.C. -- When Howard Beckett Jr. flashes a grin and lets out a loud, warm belly laugh, it’s impossible for people around him to not smile right back.

For 42 years, his signature smiles brightened the hallways and grounds of The Byrnes School, where he served as custodian and grew to be more like family to hundreds of student, parents and staff members.
