The Women’s League of Hartsville met Tuesday night at the Haven Day Spa on West Carolina Avenue for a Mix and Mingle membership social to begin their new year and recruit new members.
The Women’s League was established in 1972 as the Newcomer’s Club and as a means for women to share social, education and community service. As the organization broaden its scope and as members no longer new to the community continued to be a part of the organization the name was changed to better reflect the membership of the organization.
This year’s president, Brandi Wheeler, said the group continues to be committed to increasing awareness and dedicating resources to enhance the community in which they live.
The league accomplishes this through hosting an annual auction to raise funds for various community projects.
Known throughout Darlington County and the Pee Dee as a philanthropic group, Wheeler said, they are dedicated to “helping other community organizations by fundraising and giving.”
In 2010, the auction was held on Feb. 6 at the Hartsville Country Club with The Durant Children’s Center of Hartsville and Kalmia Gardens of Coker College as beneficiaries of the proceeds of the silent and live auctions. A college scholarship is also awarded to a local young woman.
The Women’s League announces its 2011 auction date Feb. 5 at the Hartsville Country Club.
The group has provided more than $150,000 in donations to local not-for-profit organizations and college scholarships to local young women in the past 30 years.
Wheeler said they are encouraging organizations in Darlington County to apply to be the 2011 beneficiaries. Applications are due by Sept. 28. A representative of all applicant organizations will give a brief presentation to the Women’s League board on Oct. 5 at the Hartsville Memorial Library. Send application to Women’s League of Hartsville, attention Carla Dunton, 313 Lyndale Dr., Hartsville SC 29550 by Sept. 28. For an application or additional info: (843) 332-5471 Brandi Wheeler or (843) 409-1817 Tammy Epps.
In addition to the auction, the group plans a spring fashion show featuring local merchants, a holiday ornament exchange and the pina colada table at the Greater Hartsville Chamber of Commerce Taste of Hartsville.
Members of the executive board for 2010-2011 are Wheeler, Lulu’s, president; Tammy Epps, Edward Jones, auction chair; Audrey Tripp, Hartsville Memorial Library, secretary; Graham Segars, Sonoco, treasurer; Cheryl Smith, Sonoco, IT director; and Summer Baker, Sonoco, new member outreach.
